Is Advocacy For You?

Since 2018, nonprofits and charities have had unlimited opportunites to do advocacy that supports their mission. Nonprofits and charities can achieve just as much for the people they serve by improving the systems that support them as they can through direct service delivery. A charity serving people experiencing homelessness can provide shelter, but it can create an even greater impact by advocating for better affordable housing policies. Food banks can provide food to people in need, but securing stronger income supports can have an equally significant, if not greater, impact on food insecurity.

Advocating for better public policy is a powerful part of how we serve our communities. Ontario for All is here to help you maximize your impact through advocacy.

Advocacy takes many forms. It doesn’t have to be confrontational or even highly visible. Some nonprofits have made a significant impact by providing policymakers with research and helping elected officials better understand the realities of the front lines. Others have contributed through committee hearings or policy forums, while some have organized nonpartisan campaigns to push for meaningful policy change.

Each approach can be an effective tool for shaping public policy and helping ensure the people you serve have the supports they need.

Have a look at the nonprofit advocacy spectrum here to see where your nonprofit will feel most comfortable playing a role.
